Bernie Robertson was presented with his trophy by Cardwell Garden Centre director, Kieran Gallagher, right and Inverclyde’s gardening guru, George Irvine.

THE winners of this year’s Cardwell GardenFest competition have been chosen.

As well as being impressed by the colourful display from overall winner Bernie Robertson, from Inverkip, judges were impressed with the gardening skills of both a teenager and an 82-year-old gran.

Bernie receive a trophy and a £50 gift voucher.

The Junior winner is 14-year-old Thomas Williams, from Port Glasgow, and the judges’ discretionary award goes to octogenarian, Maureen Wood, from Greenock. Both will receive a trophy.

This year’s Cardwell GardenFest competition had to go online because of coronavirus restrictions.

Gardeners were asked to post a maximum of three photographs of their garden on the Cardwell Garden Centre Facebook Page.

The judges were Inverclyde’s gardening guru, George Irvine and Cardwell Garden Centre director, Kieran Gallagher.

Kieran said: “Judging the competition was obviously a lot different from previous years, but from the photographs posted on our Facebook Page, it’s patently obvious that people from Inverclyde are still keen gardeners and take a great pride in their outdoor areas.

“It was a hard job to choose a winner from some fabulous entries and we were particularly impressed by the enthusiasm and dedication of both teenager Thomas Williams and green-fingered gran, Maureen Wood to create their garden displays during lockdown.

“We’d like to thank everyone for taking part and hopefully, the competition can return to more traditional set-up next year.”
