Inverclyde Now Logo FOOTBALL — Update From Port Juniors 2003s

9 October, 2019 | Local

The 2003s were away to BSC Glasgow; both games last season were close and the teams were equal on points, with the Juniors having a game in hand.

Jason and Ben in midfield for the Juniors was pulling the strings and slowly the Port side got on top of the battle. Seb and Kirk on opposite wings gave the Juniors plenty of width and pace as they looked for the opener.

However with eight minutes gone, it was BSC that created the first clear-cut chance — a good move through the middle with a cutting ball into the box. Keeper Jack W was alert to it and was out to smother at the striker’s feet.

The Juniors went on the offensive and Innes was pulling their centre pairing all over the place. The breakthrough came when Kirk launched a long throw that was headed on by Innes and, as the ball dropped, Jack F was on the spot to volley a screamer into the top left corner.

The boys pushed for another, with the front three continuing to be a handful for BSC. Jason was unlucky to see his drive from 20 yards just dip over the bar. Jack F came close from a set-piece but his long-range strike was just too high.

The coaches made a couple of changes at the break and the boys knew what was required to keep their 100 per cent start to the league. Connor’s pace was unsettling to the BSC back line. With five minutes on the clock, a brilliant move down the right saw the ball at Connor’s feet eight yards out. His strike was well saved by the keeper and he could only direct the rebound into the keeper’s arms.

The game became a bit stop-start after that which was a surprise as the referee in the first half had tried to let it flow. BSC equalised from a free kick and it became a bit of a battle all over the field with both teams struggling to break the other team down.

With the clock ticking down, a route-one ball split the Juniors’s defence. Justyn made up ground on the striker but he got his shot away eight yards out. Jack W produced an outstanding full-length save to palm the ball away before securing and keeping the score level.

The match finished 1:1, meaning the Juniors are the only team in the league that is still unbeaten.

Referee’s man of the match was Connor.
