THREE local flag American footballers, playing for Inverclyde Phoenix, have been chosen to represent Scotland at an international tournament in Slovenia in July.

Justin Goodall (15) and Charlie Rose (14) will be part of the under-15 squad, while Gregor Flynn (15) will be part of the under-17 squad.

They were chosen from almost 70 players at trials held recently at Ravenscraig Sports Centre, Motherwell,

Phoenix head coach Vince Gillen said: “I am so pleased for the boys. We are a small squad and to have three chosen to play for Scotland is a great achievement and is a reward for their hard work over the past few years.

“Flag American Football is a steadily growing sport, with youth teams in Scotland developing in leaps and bounds, especially since the sport has been chosen as a new Olympic trial sport. The emphasis is on fun and teamwork, and both boys and girls can play together on the team.

“We have just returned from an Edinburgh tournament where we won the Scottish Flag Football Winter League Plate Competition, winning all four of our games.

“We train all year round and are always looking for more players. We hope to build three teams: Under-11s, Under-15s and Under-17s.”
