EYESORE Greenock Town Centre Building Set For Demolition

INVERCLYDE Council has purchased the former Babylon nightclub premises in Greenock town centre and has applied to demolish it.

The building on the corner of Argyle Street/West Stewart Street — which was built as a cinema and was also a bingo hall — has been vacant for many years.

Council leader Councillor Stepehen McCabe told Inverclyde Now: “The building has been bought by the council. We are planning to demolish it in advance of a potential housing developer being identified.”

A building warrant application for demolition at a cost of £225,000 has been submitted to Inverclyde Council officials.

The building has attracted attention over the years because it has been overgrown with vegetation, prompting comparison with Wonder of the Ancient World the Hanging Gardens Of Babylon.

The latest Inverclyde Strategic Housing Investment Plan lists the site as a ‘slippage project’ with capacity for 24 flats that would be completed in 2023/24.
