DATE Set For 20mph Limit Coming Into Force On 1,000 Inverclyde Roads

27 March, 2026 | Local

NEW 20mph speed limits will be introduced across Inverclyde’s roads network next month.

Drivers are being encouraged to be ready for the change from 30mph to 20mph when it takes effect on Monday 27 April on more than 1,000 local roads.

The changes are being implemented by Inverclyde Council in line with the national 20mph strategy and with support from Transport Scotland.

Transport Scotland will also introduce 20mph speed limits on parts of the trunk road network at the same time, including on the A78 in Greenock, with Wemyss Bay already in effect.

Most main roads in the local and trunk roads networks, such as Eldon Street, Drumfrochar Road and the A8, will remain at the current 30mph or 40mph speed limits.

The rollout of the lower speed limits in built-up areas follows a comprehensive analysis of Inverclyde’s roads network assessed against fixed criteria set by Transport Scotland.

Many locations in Inverclyde already have 20mph speed limits in place including near schools and in town and village centres.

If a pedestrian is hit by a vehicle travelling at 30mph they are seven times more likely to die than if they are hit by a vehicle at 20mph.

New 20mph speed limit signs are being installed in locations across the area where the speed limit will come into force.

A map with full details of roads included in the 20mph rollout, as well as roads that are unaffected, is available on the Inverclyde Council website.

A spokesperson for Inverclyde Council said: “The scheme aligns with the national 20mph strategy and is designed to improve road safety in built-up areas across Inverclyde.

“Slower vehicles create safer spaces for everyone to enjoy, improving the quality of life for everyone in our communities.

“While there are more than 1,000 roads being changed to 20mph zones, it’s important that people familiarise themselves with the roads that are changing but also the roads that will remain at their current speed limit.”

Current average speeds on residential streets in Inverclyde are generally under 25 mph, however, the introduction of a 20mph limit will help lower overall vehicle speeds particularly those who currently drive at 30 mph or over, within these types of residential streets.

In line with Transport Scotland guidance, the 20mph speed limits are initially being introduced using temporary traffic regulation orders (TTROs) to allow for the scheme to be tried and tested, monitored, and to take into account feedback from road users and stakeholders.

Following an evaluation period, the intention is to introduce permanent speed limit orders (SLO) on roads as appropriate and further consultation would be required at that stage.

To allow councils to deliver the national strategy, Transport Scotland has provided funding for this project.
