A PLAN to use a Greenock industrial unit as an indoor dog exercise area has been given the go-ahead.
Councillors on Inverclyde Planning Board approved the application which involves unit 10 at Larkfield Industrial Estate, Earnhill Road.
The facility will be available for private hire in individual one-hour sessions, open from 9am to 9pm.
Each booking will be for a single dog owner and their dog, with the option to include additional dogs under the same ownership and supervision, up to a maximum of four.
Council planners were in favour of the application. Their report stated: “The proposed use would offer a means of employment for the staff member working on site and would not result in a significant departure from the industrial character of the area.”
In a statement to planners, applicant Kara Murdoch explained: “Currently, there is no comparable facility within Inverclyde. As a professional dog walker and dog owner, I am aware of significant demand for a secure, private indoor space where dogs can exercise and train safely.
“Public parks are often unsuitable for off-lead exercise, which can result in conflicts between dogs. This facility would provide a controlled environment that supports responsible dog ownership and training.
“A similar indoor dog park operates successfully within an industrial unit in Clydebank, attracting visitors from a wide geographical area. The proposed development would be the only facility of its kind in Inverclyde and has the potential to attract visitors from outside the area, contributing to increased footfall and secondary trade for local businesses.
“Overall, the proposed change of use represents a low-impact, well-managed development that meets an identified local need while remaining compatible with surrounding uses.”
No objections were received.
