INVERCLYDE Council face a bill of hundreds of thousands of pounds for work to the Waterfront Leisure Centre, including nearly half a million pounds to replace the boiler.

Specialist mechanical and electrical consultants have been commissioned to oversee a phased approach for various “packages of work”.

It’s estimated that boiler replacement will cost £460,000 which is more than the council had set aside.

A report to councillors states: “Given the high priority nature of the works it is intended to allocate a further £230,000 from future years Core Property General Provision.”

The cost covers temporary boiler equipment needed to ensure the Greenock centre can keep operating while the new one is installed.

Meanwhile it is estimated that replacing the floating floor in the training pool will cost £210,000.

The report states: “Inverclyde Leisure have commissioned and received a full inspection report for the hydraulic floor of the training pool which is used for adjusting the depth at the deep end.

“The floor was installed shortly after the initial opening of the facility and has now reached the point where it is not fully operational and beyond economical repair.

“Should a replacement floating floor be approved to provide the same functionality, it will be necessary to take forward more detailed feasibility work to establish what technical solutions are available and the implications for Inverclyde Leisure operations during replacement.”

Survey works are also due to take place regarding a new fire/panic alarm system.
