7 March, 2017 | Noticeboard

A QUICK-thinking teenager tackled a bin blaze at Port Glasgow town centre church.

Jamie Thirlaway was walking from the train station to meet his mum at the retail park around 6.45 last night (Tuesday) when he spotted the fire beside St Andrew’s Church in Princes Street.

Jamie (15) from Inverkip, who is the Gourock Army Cadet group, said: “There was a glow and I heard crackling.

“There was a woman in the church hall and I got a fire extinguisher and put the fire out.”

The fire brigade had been contacted by another passerby and attended to check the scene.

Anyone who saw suspicious behaviour in the area is urged to call police on 101.
