Inverclyde Now Logo SCHOOLS Find Out How Much ‘Attainment Gap’ Money They Are Getting

1 February, 2017 | Noticeboard

THE Scottish Government has announced how much money will be given directly to each of the 27 local authority schools in Inverclyde to help close the ‘poverty-related attainment gap’.

The area is getting a total of almost £2.5million of extra funding from the Government’s new £120 million Pupil Equity Funding scheme. Instead of the cash being given to Inverclyde Council’s education department to divide up, each school is getting the money directly for head teachers and school leaders to decide what it is spent on.

Allocations are based on the number of pupils from Primary One to Third Year known to be eligible for free school meals, with schools receiving around £1,200 per pupil.

Deputy First Minister John Swinney said: “I want every child in Scotland to have the best possible start in life, and it is unacceptable for children from the poorest backgrounds to have their chances limited by circumstances outside their control. This Government has made clear our priority is to close the poverty-related attainment gap and our new £120 million Pupil Equity Funding is aimed at doing just that.

“We are providing additional ring-fenced funding which will enable individual schools to target support where it is needed the most. The allocations I am announcing today will let parents, teachers and school leaders see how much funding their schools will receive in 2017-18 to help break the inter-generational cycle of deprivation.”
