GARDENERS will be putting giant vegetables on display this weekend at Cardwell Garden Centre.

The centre near Gourock is hosting the annual Strathclyde Leek and Onion Society Show, on Saturday 30 September and Sunday 1 October.

Hundreds of entries are expected at the free event with some of the leeks on show up to three feet high.

Crowds will also be able to enjoy seeing enormous onions and colossal carrots among other vegetables such as potatoes, cauliflowers and beetroot.

Entries in the competition’s 25 classes have come from all over Scotland and the vegetables have been carefully nurtured by enthusiastic gardeners over the past nine months. Prize money ranges from £10 to £45 in some categories.

As well as the Leek and Onion Show, Cardwell will also host a craft Fair, barbecue, face-painting, food tasting and live music. Sea rescue charity RNLI will have a display stand in the centre.

Cardwell’s retail general manager, Paul Carmichael said: “It’s not an exaggeration to say that these guys certainly know their onions — and every other vegetable you can think of.

“It’s incredible how big they can get their veg to grow and the crowds who come along never fail to be amazed.

“You could say that everyone who comes along at the weekend will be lucky spuds, as we’ve loads of fun activities for all ages.”
