INVERCLYDE proudly flew the flag for Scotland at the weekend when the co-hosts of the P1 Scottish Grand Prix of the Sea, which debuted in Greenock last year, picked up a RYA Powerboat industry award in Southampton.

The P1 event’s key local partners were among some 250 racers, supporters, friends and family who celebrated the success of British Powerboat Racing across the sport’s many disciplines at the RYA Powerboat Racing awards ceremony 2016.

The leading roles of both Inverclyde Council and regenration company Riverside Inverclyde in making the first Scottish Grand Prix of the Sea such a success were recognised by the presentation of the 2016 RYA Industry Award for Best Contribution From A Host Venue.

Neil Lochiel, responsible for enterprise and corporate development at Riverside Inverclyde, said: “I was delighted to collect the award on behalf of Riverside Inverclyde and Inverclyde Council at the inspirational RYA event on Saturday.

“I accepted the award on behalf of the many organisations, individuals and the ‘blue light’ services, without which this event could not have taken place. It also recognises how this first ever P1 Scottish Grand Prix of the Sea event was embraced by the people of Inverclyde, and beyond, with 30,000 enjoying the spectacle.

“Together we are already working to make this year’s event on 24/25 June an ever greater success, so thank-you to the RYA for the award and the recognition that comes with it.”

The event at Greenock last year

Thirty-three awards were presented to the crème-de-la-crème of powerboat racers who last year clinched a whole host of British, European, World and Speed records across the sport’s many classes. The event is an annual showcase for the sport in the UK and is attended by racers from throughout the country.

RYA Powerboat Racing Manager Jeni Jelf said: “Powerboat racing has had another strong year, with 91 racing events being held across the UK. We thank everyone who came along for such an enjoyable night – and especially Guille Design, Team WNT and Inverclyde Council and Riverside Inverclyde who joined us as the winners of the 2016 Powerboat Racing Industry Awards.”
