Inverclyde Now Logo DEMOCRACY Matters Event In Inverkip To Look At More Power At Local Level

17 September, 2018 | Noticeboard

THE first in a series of Inverclyde-wide events inviting people to discuss the idea of communities having more decision-making powers takes place in Inverkip this weekend.

CVS Inverclyde is joining forces with Inverkip Community Hub to host the Democracy Matters conversation. It takes place on Saturday 22 September, 11am to 1pm, and is asking questions about ‘Your Community, Your Ideas, Your Future’.

People who live or work in Inverkip and Wemyss Bay are invited to drop in and contribute to the informal discussion. It will look at how the local community can decide their own future by contributing to key decisions about making public services more locally-focused.

The conversation forms part of a Scottish Governance Review, which seeks to devolve more power to a more local level. Bill Clements, deputy manager, CVS Inverclyde, said: “We want to ensure our Inverclyde community has its say in the Scottish-wide Democracy Matters conversation.

“To help achieve this, we are collaborating with Inverkip Community Hub to gather locals together in this discussion about communities deciding their own future and, at the same time, helping to create exciting opportunities. We look forward to welcoming people on the day.”

The conversation will look at whether it is a good idea for communities to be more in control and how it could work in practice, including what sort of issues would be covered. It will examine people’s experiences of getting involved in decision-making processes that affect their community.

The session will also ask if there are existing forms of local level decision-making that could play a part in exercising new local powers.

The event is one of a number that will take place across Inverclyde during September and October.

Refreshments will be provided.
