GREENOCK’S Wellpark Mid Kirk church is hosting a Summer of Love concert on Sunday (27 August).

The event takes place in the Cathcart Square building at 3pm and is being sponsored by Flower Vogue who are providing flowers.

Minister the Rev. Alan Sorensen said: “In 1967 the world was told to ‘be sure to wear some flowers in your hair’ in the anthem of the Summer of Love and this Sunday Wellpark Mid Kirk will be holding a celebration of those hippie days 50 years on with a concert full of the songs from that year.

“We’ve been telling everyone to wear flowers in their hair but if they won’t, or can’t, flowers will be provided! We’ve also asked everyone to come in 60s or hippie outfits with a prize for the best.

“We are so grateful to our friends at Flower Vogue, where we get the church flowers every week, for joining in the fun with such a wonderful bit of sponsorship.”

“The music of the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Procol Harum, Englebert and the likes is still incredibly popular and everyone who comes will find themselves transported back to that fabulous summer of peace and love. We’re so fortunate to have some great local artists taking part like Davie Nicol and Arlene Casimiro, The Picketts and Paul Baird plus several others.”

As a taster for the concert, Mr Sorensen had the congregation singing along last Sunday to his version of Scott McKenzie’s classic song If You’re Going to San Francisco, changing the lyrics to, “If you’re going to Wellpark Mid Kirk, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair. In the pews, of Wellpark Mid Kirk, you’re gonna meet some gentle people there….”

He added, “It’s going to be a happening, man – like, real groovy and far out – we’re having a bit of a love-in on Sunday!”

The concert is being run in aid of the church’s fabric fund and entrance is £5 which includes a free flower for your hair.
