LATEST figures from Inverclyde police show serious violence in the area down by almost half. 

There were 74 crimes of violence in the nine months up to 31 December 2016, compared with 131 during the same period the year before, a decrease of about 44 per cent.

The number of attempted murders fell from 14 to just one, the number of murders fell from three to one and there was a 30 per cent drop in serious assaults, down from 78 to 54.

Robberies decreased from 23 to 10.

Overall there were 57 fewer victims of violent crime during the nine months.

Local police chiefs state: “We continue to apply a holistic response covering a range of tactics to detect and deter violent offences.

“We work with a number of agencies including Housing, Social Work and Inverclyde Council Social Protection Team to ensure co-ordinated, intelligence-led pro-activity to identify offenders and safeguard victims. This has led to a number of violent offenders being reported and subsequently imprisoned over the last year.”

There was also a large reduction in the number of break-ins, down almost half from 262 to 143.
