AN object that sparked an alert over a “possible torpedo” on a beach at Wemyss Bay turned out to be part of a boat.

Police and Coastguard rescue teams were called to Undercliff Road around 8 o’clock last night (Thursday).

The area was secured until a bomb squad from Clyde Naval Base, Faslane could attend at low tide on Friday to inspect the object.

Greenock Coastguard Rescue Team issued an update later in the day on their Facebook page stating: “On investigation by Royal Navy EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), we can confirm that this item is no threat and has been identified as the lead bulb keel from a previous vessel incident a number of years ago.

“The item has been left in situ and awaiting removal from another authority.”
