BALLET School Celebrates Students’ Achievements With Summer Show

3 June, 2023 | Local

ELITE Academy of Dance will bring an end to its 14th year of classical ballet in Inverclyde with its annual summer show.

It takes place at the Beacon Arts Centre, Greenock, from Thursday to Saturday (8 to 10 June), with record audience numbers, along with the highest ever number of students taking part.

Elite Academy of Dance was established by Julie Gunn Kavanagh in 2009 and it remains the only dedicated Royal Academy of Dance classical ballet school in Inverclyde.

The school currently runs 27 ballet classes every week from its private studio in Greenock. This allows a steady progression from the Baby Ballet classes right through to classes for students in their late teens and early twenties.

Elite also runs its Silverswans programme twice a week for the over 50’s. All classes follow the Royal Academy’s syllabus. Over the years Elite has developed into a centre of excellence for classical ballet.

This year has proved to be very successful with four students auditioning and now moving on to full-time training.

Hannah Deary and Hope Wallace will be combining classical ballet training and their school work as they join fourth year at the Dance School of Scotland in Glasgow.

Anna Murray follows in the footsteps of Rachel Ashmead and Elise Wilmot and will study ballet and dance at MGA Academy of Performing arts in Edinburgh doing a BA (Hons) in Dance.

Avril McLoughlin starts a BA in Musical Theatre in August at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. All four girls have been long standing pupils at Elite, with Hannah, Anna and Avril all starting their journey in dance at the Baby Ballet classes.

The summer show is all about celebrating another year and allowing all the students to have some fun. It finishes another chapter in the school’s history, with another one about to be written as classes resume in August.
