DOGS for Good is now accepting enquiries from people across Inverclyde who may benefit from an assistance dog.
Over the past year, the charity has been working in partnership with organisations across Inverclyde to develop support for local people with its Community Dog service.
Partnership with Inverclyde Royal Hospital has recently been recognised nationally, with Dogs for Good and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde named finalists in the Partnership of the Year category at the SCVO Scottish Charity Awards.
A spokesperson stated: “We are keen to ensure that local people know our support is now available, as many people are unaware that assistance dogs can help with a wide range of everyday tasks, supporting greater independence, confidence and quality of life.”
While each dog’s skills are matched specifically to an individual or family’s needs, assistance dogs can help with in many ways including:
— Opening and closing doors
— Helping with dressing and undressing
— Retrieving items such as a phone or TV remote, or dropped articles like keys or a bag
— Loading and emptying the washing machine
— Pressing lift and pedestrian crossing buttons
— Reaching up to shop counters with items such as a wallet
— Helping with physiotherapy sessions
— Providing a calming headrest
A free information event is being held at Branchton Community Centre, Greenock, in September for people to find out more about the service, meet members of the team and ask any questions they may have.
