ARCHIVE Pictures: Greenock’s Westburn Sugar Refinery

21 June, 2025 | Local

ONE of Greenock’s many long-gone industrial landmarks, Tate & Lyle’s massive Westburn Sugar Refinery on Drumfrochar Road closed in the 1990s.

Images from the Eric Webster collection show the complex when it was still operating and the lengthy operation to demolish it following its closure in 1997.

The site to the north of Drumfrochar Road continues in industrial use, as the Pelagia factory. The larger southern plot is vacant, although Greenock businessmen Sandy and James Easdale have planning permission to build 47 houses there, through their Dalglen Investments wing.
