A POLICE officer was allegedly assaulted while helping to break up a covid-breach party in Greenock.

Police responded to a report of a noisy gathering in Lynedoch Street, about 11.50pm yesterday (Wednesday).

As they dispersed a small group, a 27-year-old woman allegedly assaulted one of the attending officers. She was arrested and will reported to prosecutors.

Covid fines were issued to others in the property.

Inverclyde area commander Chief Inspector Paul Cameron said:”It is disappointing that individuals continue to ignore the covid restrictions put in place to protect all of us.

“In relation to the [alleged] police assault, it is completely unacceptable for officers to come to work and be assaulted whilst doing their duty to serve and protect our communities.”
