Inverclyde Now Logo YOUNGSTERS Can Get Silly Squad Summer Packs From Town Centre Libraries

24 July, 2020 | Noticeboard

CHILDREN aged 12 and under can win rewards, play games and earn badges, as part of this year’s Silly Squad Summer Reading Challenge.

Silly Squad Summer Packs, containing books, activity sheets and a special Silly Squad surprise, are available from Greenock Central, Port Glasgow and Gourock libraries.

The packs are available until 15 August and can be ordered using the Connect and Collect service online or by phone.

Councillor Jim Clocherty, convener of Inverclyde Council’s education and communities committee, said: “This year’s challenge is all about funny books, happiness and having a laugh.

“The Silly Squad is a team of animal friends who love to go on adventures and get stuck into all kinds of different funny books. The Silly Squad features characters who have been specially designed by Laura Ellen Anderson — the award-winning author and illustrator of Amelia Fang and Evil Emperor Penguin.

“Libraries are places of wonder that feed the imagination. This event helps children discover the joy of reading and the sheer diversity of the books available both in hard copy and online. We’ve added lots of new ebooks and e-audio to our Borrowbox collection to help children complete the challenge.

“The challenge is always very popular in Inverclyde with large numbers of kids taking part. It also makes a valuable contribution to how well local children do at school.”

The Connect and Collect service allows library members to order items by phone or online for next day collection from Greenock Central Library, Port Glasgow Library or Gourock Library. People who aren’t already library members can join online.

Once an order has been received, the books, and Silly Squad materials, will be prepared and bagged for collection between 11am and 2pm the following day at the nominated library.

People who want to use Connect and Collect should call Greenock Central Library on 01475 712323, Gourock Library on 01475 712340 or Port Glasgow Library on 01475 715629. Phone lines are open from 11am to 2pm, Monday to Friday.

Anyone ordering online should include Silly Squad as one of their preferred genres so that staff can put everything that’s needed to complete the challenge in the bag.

Children can also take part in the digital Summer Reading Challenge by registering online at www.sillysquad.org.uk.

Test and Protect is in operation at the libraries so visitors need to give staff their name and contact details to comply with the Scottish Government’s coronavirus regulations.

This allows people to be contacted quickly in the event of a Covid-19 outbreak so that they can be tested for the virus and self-isolate if necessary.
