A GOUROCK school doubled down before the summer holidays by securing two prestigious national award nominations.

Moorfoot Primary ended the term on a high after being shortlisted for a pair of prizes at the Scottish Education Awards 2020.

The school was listed in the ‘Parent and Family Engagement’ category while teacher Elyse Buchanan was named in the final three for ‘Digital Innovator of the Year’.

Elyse Buchanan with acting head teacher Christine Murray, and pupils Emma Fairlie, Emily Barnes and Zoe More.

Sadly this year’s awards, due to take place in November, had to be cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic, so the finalists were honoured early.

The awards are run by national governing body Education Scotland.

Councillor Jim Clocherty, Inverclyde Council’s convener of education and communities, said: “Congratulations to Moorfoot Primary on what is a rare achievement being shortlisted for not one, but two Scottish Education Awards.

“It’s a fantastic way to end a term, which has had so many lows because of the coronavirus pandemic, on such a high.

“It is very fitting that Moorfoot Primary and acting depute head Elyse Buchanan have been recognised in these two categories at a time when reliance on technology, particularly within the education system, and when parent and family engagement has never been greater.

“While the awards ceremony has unfortunately been cancelled, I know this won’t stop the whole Moorfoot community celebrating this deserved recognition, and rightly so.”

Moorfoot Primary includes a nursery class and Garvel Deaf Centre.

The Scottish Education Awards celebrate the hard work, achievements, innovation and dedication from those involved in the country’s education system.

Inverclyde has enjoyed success in recent years with Kilmacolm Primary and Nursery winning the ‘Raising Attainment in Literacy’ prize in 2018 and King’s Oak Primary triumphing in the ‘Family and Community Learning’ category.
