POLICE are hunting a cowardly thug who tried to rob a Greenock pensioner as she walked home from shops.

The man, with a scarf over his face, pounced on the 75-year-old from behind in Fairrie Street, near Sinclair Street, around 10am on Monday.

He made threats and demanded money but was challenged by a passerby and fled empty-handed.

Detectives are keen to hear from the member of the public who helped and anyone else who was in the area at the time and may have seen the suspect who was wearing a dark beanie hat.

Witnesses can contact police on 101.
