POLICE have thanked members of the public who alerted them to a man acting suspiciously in central Greenock.
Extra patrols were in the area and were able to respond immediately to the scene on Sir Michael Place just after 2pm yesterday.
The man was allegedly observed trying car door handles. The 52-year-old was arrested and held in custody to appear at court today.
Sergeant Jason Logsdon said: “Police thank the public for their assistance in reporting this so that we could take appropriate action.
“We arrested a male for a similar type of offence recently whereby he received a six-month custodial sentence as a result.”
