Proposed office and welfare building

A LEADING fish processing company is aiming to safeguard the future of its factory in Greenock through a programme of modernisation.

Pelagia has applied for planning permission to alter, refurbish and extend its facility at Weighbridge House, Drumfrochar Road, which was originally part of the Tate and Lyle sugar refinery.

The operation, acquired by Pelagia in 2016, processes salmon material from sources across Scotland, including fish farms, to produce fish oil and fish protein concentrate for the animal or aqua culture feed markets.

A document submitted with the planning application states: “These products and the Greenock plant provide an important revenue stream for Pelagia and [the factory is] a valuable facility for the Scottish fish farming industry at large.

“Pelagia (Greenock) Ltd employs 11 persons on a full-time basis and draws on the support of other local businesses in the fulfilment of its operations and thus contributes significantly to the local economy.

“The plant benefits from the area’s good road infrastructure and proximity to the port for the movement of bulk materials.”

The statement continues: “Compared to Pelagia (UK) Ltd’s other facilities, the site is run down and outdated. This is due to lack of investment in the years prior to Pelagia (UK) Ltd’s full ownership of the site.

“Pelagia (UK) Ltd. intends undertaking significant investment to improve its recently-acquired facility at Weighbridge House to bring it up to acceptable modern standards.

“The proposed improvements will enhance the working environment and visual appearance, and better support operational responsibilities whilst allowing the company to benefit from production, efficiency, reliability and environmental opportunities.

“The development will help safeguard the company’s future on the site and its contribution to the local economy and employment.”

The appearance of the processing and storage buildings will be improved by recladding.

The roof line of one of the sheds will be raised to allow for new delivery procedures and installation of a new internal structure to accommodate bulk storage.

The production facility will be modernised including replacement of several substantial pieces of equipment.

A building will be built to house offices and welfare facilities which are currently in a temporary structure.
