FOOTBALL -- Gourock YAC Update -- Under-13s Win League
![]()
Under-13s -- Gourock YAC Under-13s are the proud champions of the Paisley, Johnstone and District First Division for season 2011/2012. The local lads travelled to Paisley on Saturday needing a victory against the league leaders, St Peter’s, and produced a fantastic display which saw them return home with the first division trophy. The YAC played against a strong breeze in the first half with goalkeeper Kieran Devlin and his back four producing a spirited display to keep the score level at half-time. Gourock came flying out of the blocks in the second half and put St Peter’s under pressure for most of that period. The winner came from an unstoppable free kick by Andrew Ellis after Blair Docherty was hauled down 25 yards from goal. The YAC could have added to the scoreline after near misses by Jay Devlin, Ryan (big shorts ) Ball and Jack Purdue. The coaching staff thank all 21 boys who have made this season such a success. They have been a credit to the club and deserve to be collecting the top honour this season.
Congratulations to the whole squad from everyone at Gourock YAC. This is a tremendous achievement for the side in their first year of competitive football. Good luck also in the Sectional cup final on Wednesday night.
Under-17s -- Irvine Thistle 3 - Gourock YAC 2
YAC's good run of results and form came to an end in the Sectional cup semi-final against a strong Irvine team. The 17s won the toss and decided to hit uphill against the strong wind in the mid-day sun. The home team made the most of the conditions lumping the ball into the heart of the YAC box at every opportunity with Gourock struggling to get the passing game going in the long grass. Attrition payed off for Thistle with three unanswered goals including a wind-assisted direct from a corner kick. The second half was always going to be one-way traffic, although Gourock failed to produce many clear chances. Goals from Nick Jack and Ryan Lewis ensured a nervous last 10 minutes for Irvine whose commitment on the day was more obvious than YAC's. Referee's man of the match was David Piggott. Thanks to sponsors Inverclyde Council. YAC's last game of the season is on Sunday 3 June in the League Cup Final against St Peters, at Keanie Park, Johnstone.
