A spokesman for the force said: “While officers would welcome anyone coming directly to them with information, the public is reminded that rumour and speculation on social networking sites can often be unhelpful to the investigation.”

Sixteen-year-old Elaine was murdered in June 1986. On the 25th anniversary of the death last year, her father Jack appealed for help in solving the murder. Tragically Mr Doyle died in January this year.
