PERFORMERS Staging 'Company' Musical
A LOCAL theatre company is presenting a new production of one of the most influential musicals of all time.
Stephen Sondheim’s ‘Company opened on Broadway in 1970, winning six Tony awards that year.
No Nonsense Productions are staging the show in Lyle Kirk’s Newark Street building (formerly Finnart St. Paul’s) from Wednesday 22 August to Saturday 25 August.
Over the past few years, the company have produced a number of ground-breaking musicals including ‘Rent’, ‘Spring Awakening’ and ‘The Musical of Musicals: The Musical!’ in venues around Inverclyde and also at Glasgow’s Mitchell Theatre.
Mark Macdonald, founder of No Nonsense Productions and musical director for the show, said: “Company is a musical that has never been performed in Inverclyde. We have a hugely talented and experienced ensemble cast of 14 people who have been working incredibly hard on what is a really demanding piece of theatre. There are some familiar faces who have been involved in shows within the area for a number of years as well as some new faces from other parts of the country. The setting of Lyle Kirk will bring the audience right into the heart of the performance in a very intimate setting.”
The story, set in New York in the 70s, centres around the character of Bobby who is turning 35. His friends who surround him are all married or engaged and he has three on/off girlfriends. Full of the usual Sondheim brilliance and wit, the study of relationships, love and company is put under the microscope throughout the show as Bobby decides whether it’s time for him to settle down with someone or remain a bachelor.
The score features a number of classic songs including “You Could Drive A Person Crazy”, “The Ladies Who Lunch” and “Being Alive”.
Tickets for the show are £10 (£8 concession) and are available by calling 07821 578 734, online through www.Skiddle.com or in person at Flava Coffee Co in Gourock.
