-- QUEEN Mary 2 Coming An Hour Early
19 October 2009

MASSIVE ocean liner Queen Mary 2 is now expected to berth at Greenock an hour earlier than expected.

The 150,000-tonne ship’s arrival at the Ocean Terminal is scheduled for 7am today (Monday) and not 8am as previously scheduled.

Queen Mary 2 is making her first visit to the Clyde as part of a fifth birthday cruise.

A viewing area will allow people to get close to the ship. Members of the public can access it via Campbell Street between 11am and 4pm, with spectators making donations to Ardgowan Hospice.

Queen Mary 2 is expected to leave at 6.30pm after a firework display at 6pm.

Inverclyde Provost Michael McCormick said: "It will be a great day for Inverclyde when the QM2 makes her maiden visit to Greenock. We can all remember the amazing atmosphere when the QE2 came home to the Clyde for the last time and the thousands of people who came from all over to see her.

“I am sure this will be another memorable occasion for Inverclyde. Thousands of visitors come to our area on cruise ships every year and it is great for local tourism and businesses. But it is also an opportunity to show the transformation underway in Inverclyde and we hope people will like what they see so much they will come back again and again."

Andrew Hemphill, Clydeport's operations manager at the Ocean Terminal, said: "We are absolutely delighted to welcome a world-famous vessel in Queen Mary 2 to Greenock and help celebrate her fifth birthday.

“This is a reward for the year-on-year investment we are making at Ocean Terminal which enables us to stage such high-profile visits like this of the world’s fastest passenger liner. We are equally delighted to have been able to raise much-needed funds for Ardgowan Hospice in Greenock and thank the public for their support and generosity.”
