PostHeaderIcon READER Talkback -- Area Needs Sustainable Employment, Not Short-Term Amazon Jobs (Two Comments)

I saw a story in the Greenock Telegraph that 1,000 jobs are to be created in Inverclyde. I thought that this is really good news as this area needs a job boost. But then I read it was with Industrious. I just laughed. It amazes me that they refused to name their client in the article, but I think everyone in the area knows that Industrious is one of the main recruitment agencies for the Gourock Fulfilment Centre of Amazon.

I was recruited by this agency and my experience and that of many others is less than favourable. I was in Amazon for six weeks at the end of last year and at the end of the six weeks we were all told not to come back as our contract was over. During that six weeks we were subjected to erratic shifts which resulted in all the agency workers forced to sit in the staff canteen for two hours and then sent home as there was no work and we were not allowed to clock in or out so we were not paid for that day.

A few months later they asked me to come back and work for them again. This time I did not go back to Amazon because of the shocking experiences I had. But others I knew did, and they were there for four weeks and then received a text message saying not to come back to work as their contract was over.

The fact of the matter is, Industrious may be promising 1,000 jobs but I would bet every penny I own that the jobs offered will be with Amazon and it will be six to eight weeks temporary contracts. The reason I am sure of this is that Industrious have recently contacted me and those I was working with before again to tell me that they are recruiting for the Amazon Fulfilment Centre and if I am interested I should contact them.

This area needs sustainable full-time employment, not temporary contracts and no real job security!

Annoyed ex-Industrious worker.

I was also recruited by this agency and my experience was also a disgrace. I also experienced sitting for hours in the canteen unpaid and one time I arrived for the start of my shift and they said it was cancelled. I asked them why did they not phone me and let me know and they replied ‘we couldn’t find your phone number.’ It is simply slave labour.
