READER Talkback -- Problems Caused By Traveller Camps (Seven Comments)
What can be done about these traveller camps? It is getting way beyond a joke now! They have been positioned behind Comet in Greenock, and the place they have set up camp, is strewn with rubbish and wasting food, and dirty nappies, so clatty! And obviously a health hazard! Why can’t these travellers get a bit of manners and clean up! I understand they have certain rights etc, but come on, they are appearing in so many places now. They have been down at the old Gantock Hotel in Gourock, and also up at Woodhall, Port Glasgow as well. What will the cruise passengers going to Newark Castle think of the camp there? What exactly is going to get done about it?

-- Agree wholeheartedly with the previous comment. The camp down at the waterfront is an eyesore. Wouldn't be so bad if they just stopped the caravans there but it’s the amount of rubbish and waste they leave lying about. Have also noticed in last few weeks a camp at Woodall and Newark Castle, also complete eyesore with discarded waste everywhere. Is it really that hard to clean up after themselves? I mean they could take it to Pottery Street or another civic amenity site and dispose of it.

-- I totally agree with these comments. Yes everyone has rights and that’s as it should be, however, why are they allowed to make such a mess and move on? As soon as a camp is set up, officials should be on site confirming rules etc and checking daily that at least the site is clean and tidy and behaviour is of an acceptable standard. If I were to leave my garden in such a state I would soon get a " visit ".

-- So let me get this straight. The councillors and police were putting their heads together to discuss what can be done about these camps in August 2011! Almost a year ago. So what has been done? Have they met? Have they come up with ideas? Or is it so much hot air? As far as I can see nothing has changed, because the travellers are still returning to the same areas and to new areas. They were moved from the area just beyond Newark Castle, which had been fenced off and they somehow managed to get their vans and caravans on to the grass. They did not move very far, only to Kelburn! Shortly after they moved then another group appeared in the car park right beside Newark Castle. Thus effectively putting the car park out of use to members of the public. How long do we have to wait to get our green spaces and car parks back?
Totally Disillusioned
Totally agree with the above comments. Surely it would be more cost-effective for the local authority to send someone in right away to inform the travellers that they must clean up after themselves rather than send a squad in to clean up their mess once they've left. I know the travellers have rights but its political correctness gone mad that these communities are allowed to set up camp and ruin an area.

-- I agree with most of the comments ,but where I am not in agreement is "Their Rights " what about "Our Rights" not to have the place covered in litter, damage to property when they break in to areas that have been fenced off to keep them out. Do they pay income tax, NHS Contributions, council tax? Councils under mamby pamby laws were forced to provide sites for them which they ignore so do not tolerate these people until they conform to OUR LAWS AND RIGHTS
FED UP Strathclyde
-- Totally agree with the comments on this forum and in particular with the comments of FED UP Strathclyde!
These travellers are not an ethnic group, Gypsy travellers come from Eastern Europe and mostly Romania. These people are mostly people who have opted out of society and chosen not to pay taxes, send their children to school or live in houses! Why should we as a community accept the eyesores and public health issues they leave behind; why should our council workers face disease by having to clear up human waste at our expense?!
These people turn up, break into enclosed yards and fenced of areas, pitch up and leave all sorts behind! Also reading Inverclyde Now and the Greenock Telegraph, is it just me or is it every time a camp is set up the number of cases of bogus workers in the area rises?!
I know there will be people out there who think the life of a traveller is a romantic lifestyle and we should welcome them to our area and protect their rights but I for one think it is time the council and the police started to treat them the same as you or I would be treated and stop pandering to them for fear of offending an ethnic group or breaking their human rights!!
