I would just like to say a goodbye to Highlanders’ Academy. On Wednesday 27 June 2012 Highlanders’ closed their doors for the last time. It was a very sad day. My daughter has had a wonderful seven years at the school. Everyone will be missed. xx

[Highlanders’ and Overton schools are merging to form the new Whinhill Primary at the present Overton building which is being extensively renovated and extended]

-- My son attended the last ever primary one class in Highlanders' and in that year alone I could see what a wonderful school it was. The teachers and headmistress were very helpful when it came to my sons issues and bent over backwards to get him to where he is now. It will be missed as he moves on to P2 up at whinhill, leaving behind many good memories for so many folk in this town that went there.

I have fond memories of this school. From five to 11 years of age I attended there...60s into the 70s before going to another school that has now passed away, Cowdenknowes High.

I remember doing a wee project about the history of the school at that time and it was regarded as the most famous school in Greenock ( perhaps ) as it had experienced a bad fire and a lot of rebuilding had to be done to restore it.

The school always seemed to have a decent football team, playing in the colours of the school tie, blue, black and yellow. We also had a good choir, appearing often at the yearly singing competitions at the Town Hall, and winning occasionally.

One of the best memories however was going on the school cruise to La Rochelle in France, Lisbon in Portugal and Vigo in Spain. I think I was 10 at the time and still have the photograph of us all on a small boat about to leave the Customhouse Quay to board the SS Uganda which became a medical ship during the Falklands conflict.

My oldest daughter also attended for a short time prior to secondary education. Yes, nice memories and sorry to see it go.
