PostHeaderIcon READER Talkback -- 'Disgusted' By State Of Larkfield Roads (Four Comments)

Does anyone else feel completely disgusted at the state of Cumberland Road and Westmorland Road because of endless works and building projects? School kids are put in danger, large buses heading to the nearby depot are constantly stuck in jams on this busy route causing congestion and manic rat-run drivers looking for alternative routes. Accidents are common, indeed I witnessed a bus reverse into a car in front of me when faced with a coach coming the other way just two weeks ago. The poor remedial "pot-hole" repair attempts have failed and the road closures have meant unnecessary diversions for lengthy periods of time. Personally it's costing me a lot of money in running repairs for my vehicle as I negotiate one crater to the next. The roads infrastructure in Larkfield as a whole needs some major attention.

This residential area supports hundreds of families and is served by two primary schools and a busy secondary school. Local councillors please get involved and make this right as soon as possible. No excuses, and preferably before a child or motorist has a major accident.

-- Hi, just thought I would leave some feedback on the situation. My car is currently in the garage because of the potholes on Cumberland Road, mainly that big one at the top where the bus stop is. I've went over it a few times now, felt the force it's had on my car and now my car needs repaired! I actually wasn't going to bother reporting it as I thought it would fall on deaf ears, but it seems I'm not the only one needing repairs done to my car because of this problem.

-- I totally agree. I have to use this road regularly as I work at the Texas Instruments factory on Earnhill Road. The condition of the surrounding roads is nothing more than a complete joke. It’s a busy stretch at the best of times but having to contend with builders wandering around the road, diggers, and other equipment blocking the road is ridiculous. The potholes and damaged road surface are doing their best to wreck my car. This along with trying to avoid the buses is becoming infuriating.

It’s surely about time the local council had a look at the state of this area and came up with some sort of alternative rather than sticking their heads in the sand.

-- I live on Cumberland road and it is the worst street in Greenock at the moment. Coming home from work last week, I joined a queue of traffic heading up Cumberland Road at the Y road junction. It took me 20 minutes to get to the top of the street as two buses were trying to pass and got stuck. This would have been fine if the workmen were using their designated parking area instead of using the street to park. Cars were turning but I was only going to the top of the street and since Westmorland road is also closed at the top of the Y junction, my detour would have taken me along Inverkip Road and Auchmead Road. Even if I did this, I would not have been able to park because of the queue of traffic heading the other way.

On countless occasions I have not been able to park outside my house as the workmen find it easier to park there instead of their own car park. I drive this road daily so know where the bumps are. It’s funny how I’m driving very slow to protect my car but other road users drive right up behind me because of my speed. I’m doing them a favour since I know where the bumps are.

We have asked when the road will be resurfaced and the answer was ‘when the work has been completed’. This is not good enough. Phase one has almost been completed, then begins phase two. This has been going on for over a year so by the looks of things, the road will be left to rot for at least another year.

The bottom of Auchmead Road at Cumberland Road has no pedestrian pavement, and has a large hole in the road surrounded by red fencing. Only yesterday I was almost hit by a school bus as the driver came down Auchmead Road to turn left, looked right to give way, and turned on to the road. He did not look left and didn’t realize he had to swing on to the opposite side of the road and almost hit me. This is not a road fit for buses, cars or pedestrians at the moment and someone is going to get seriously hurt, or worse.

If this is what we have to endure to have social housing developments, I would have made a stronger objection when receiving the plans for this. We were promised ‘no disruption’. Since then I am waiting on a claim being settled for damage to our car parked outside my house. This happened in February and the car is still damaged.
