Inverclyde 86 all out

Hughenden 90 for 3

INVERCLYDE lost out in Glasgow on Saturday to a strong Hughenden side that moved up to top spot in the league as Vale of Leven and Glasgow South both dropped points at the weekend.

Hughenden won the toss and surprisingly asked Inverclyde to bat first. But the Glasgow side’s speedy and accurate opening bowling attack restricted Inverclyde to 38 for 3 after 20 overs.

Opener David Thomson was caught at point for a patient 16 in the 22nd over as he mistimed a cut shot to become the first of a five-wicket haul for the slow, left-armer Khan. Stuart Callison hit two boundaries but was caught-and-bowled by Khan attempting a third, and David Bruce was bowled trying to repeat a fine straight drive for a boundary.

The middle and lower order, held together by an undefeated David Mudie, did well to build the score, but Inverclyde’s total of 86 all out in 36 overs was well short of the mark on the dry and flat Hughenden wicket.

Inverclyde needed a good start to defend their low total and the experienced Tom Watson, back bowling at close to his best, provided just that. He trapped Redmond leg-before-wicket in the third over and Smith’s aggressive straight drive was well held by captain Dave Cooke at short extra cover in the fifth over.

When David Bruce bowled Hughenden skipper Tervet with a fine ball that brushed the top of off the bail, Inverclyde were on top with the home side at 29 for 3 after 12 overs. In his next over, Bruce then just failed to take a sharp caught-and-bowled chance from opener Mohammed.

However Mohammed (36 not out) and Murbe (25 not out) batted sensibly to take Hughenden to 58 for 3 after 20 overs. Despite good spells from Inverclyde’s change bowlers Chris Dick and Ross Blair, no further wickets were to fall as the Glasgow side comfortably passed the target in the 29th over. Tom Watson was the pick of the Inverclyde bowlers, with 2 for 21 in his 10 overs.

Senior and junior practices continue on Thursday and Tuesday evenings respectively.
