GREENOCK and District Tennis Championships are to go ahead this summer after all, organisers have announced.

The competition was postponed from its usual July fortnight because of the coronavirus lockdown but, following relaxing of some restrictions on sport, is now scheduled to take place from 10 to 22 August.

The finals will be held at Ardgowan Tennis Club on the evening of Friday 21 August and Saturday 22 August.

In addition to adult events — men’s and ladies’ singles and doubles plus mixed doubles, veterans’ singles and veterans’ men’s doubles — there will be under-12 and under-18 singles competitions.

Clubs involved in the championships are Ardgowan and Fort Matilda in Greenock, and the those in Bishopton, Kilmacolm, Largs and Skelmorlie.

Players with a normal Inverclyde residential address who may be members of other clubs can also take part.

Entry and payment can only be made online. (Click on events and scrolling down to the Greenock and District competitions.)

Each player can enter a maximum of four competitions. Entries must be in by Monday 3 August.

Tournament organising chairman Chris Jewell said: “We are really glad not to have had to cancel this year’s tournament which will go ahead in line with the Covid-19 guidelines and advice from Tennis Scotland.

“We encourage all players from all the clubs involved to enter for these local championships which are sure to again provide many exciting matches.’

The draw will be made on Thursday 6 August and all entrants will be advised by email.
