COMMUNITY wardens intervened after seeing a man allegedly armed with a knife pursuing two people in Greenock Cemetery.

Police were called to the incident around 8.20pm on Tuesday.

Sergeant Jason Logsdon said: “Community wardens on patrol observed the disturbance and were able to scare off the alleged assailant and contact police.

“After investigation a knife was recovered and a 40-year-old suspect identified and arrested for alleged assault and possession of a knife.”

He appeared at Greenock Sheriff Court yesterday and was remanded in custody.

Around 20 minutes after the cemetery incident, police responded to a report of a male in possession of a weapon on Bow road in Greenock.

Sergeant Logsdon said: “As officers arrived they observed the suspect who allegedly made off on seeing police.

“At this time a female allegedly jumped in front of a police vehicle trying to stop them from pursuing the suspect however he was arrested a short distance away after a struggle with officers.”

A 25-year-old man was charged with possession of an offensive weapon — a metal baton — and resisting arrest and a 25-year-old woman was charged with obstructing officers.

Both are scheduled to appear at court on a later date.
